What is colonic irrigation and why is it useful?
Colon irrigation is an internal bath that helps cleanse the colon of poisons and accumulated fecal matter. Unlike an enema, it does not involve the retention of water. There is no discomfort, no internal pressure— just a steady, gentle flow in and out.
It is a means of restoring the colon to a healthy state so that it can perform its function properly. It is done through a hygienic cleansing of the lower bowel or large intestine by means of water.
The diet of people living in today’s society is, on the whole, too full of refined foods, saturated oils and denatured or chemical substances that puts a strain on the whole body. Besides this the stress of modern living and the environment in which we live are conducive to creating disorders that place a great burden on the whole elimination system of the body. This creates abnormal conditions that prevents the colon from working properly. A colonic irrigation (or colonic for short) is done to clean and restore the colon to its proper function.
How is our colon supposed to function?
The colon’s main functions are to continue digestion of food that started in the small intestine, remove water for use by the body and to convey wastes and toxic (poisonous) material outside the body. It does this by means of waves of muscle contraction in the colon wall called peristalsis. It also holds bacteria that begin the process of breaking down the waste into its components thus preventing a toxic condition in the body. It should take about 24 hours for the food to move through the digestive system. But the colon handles more than the food we eat, it also expels the dead cells of the body. It is the bodies sewage system.
What are the symptoms of an unhealthy colon?
Of course the two most common symptoms are constipation and diarrhea. But there are many conditions which an unhealthy colon will produce that seem to be totally unrelated to the colon. Since the colon is the whole bodies sewage system, any problems that cause it to malfunction will have effects in many parts of the body. If waste builds up through constipation, a general condition that effects the whole body, called TOXEMIA, can occur. In this condition, poisons from the colon are circulated back through the blood stream producing grave effects on many organs. Generally speaking though, problems in the colon show up in the digestive system first. Colonics will help in any condition that is caused by a back up of poisons in the body. Since every organ throws off waste material, usually through the blood, an inability to dispose of the waste will poison the whole body.
What is constipation?
Constipation is difficult or infrequent bowel movements. When the colon becomes constipated it becomes packed or lined with accumulated feces that harden and lodge in the pockets of the colon walls. This hardened matter can impede the muscular contractions (peristalsis) and cause more feces to build up along the walls as the colon is unable to properly evacuate. This waste buildup of many months or years can actually cause the colon to become distended and abnormally shaped. The clogged colon then interferes with final absorption and digestion of the food taken in, so that instead of the body deriving nutrients, the undigested food ferments and putrefies, creating toxic chemicals. These substances provide the right environment for disease and can create headaches, indigestion, flatulence, aches and pains, foul breath, skin problems and that old tired feeling to name a few. Some common causes for constipation are overeating, eating an unbalanced diet of processed foods, ignoring the call of nature, stress, lack of sufficient exercise, nutritional deficiencies, inadequate fluid or roughage (fibre) and following an abuse of laxatives and antacids.
Can I be constipated even if I have 1, 2, 3 bowel movements a day?
Yes. The constipated colon is much like a water pipe that is partially obstructed by mineral deposits and corrosion. There is still an opening to allow some water to flow through, but it doesn't mean it is clean. Eventually the opening becomes narrower and narrower as the waste builds up to the point where it closes (impaction). This is when most surgeries' (colostomies) are performed—by removing part or all of the colon. Constipation also occurs through an inadequate emptying of the contents of the bowel despite the numerous daily bowel movements.
Is colon irrigation habit forming?
No. The purpose of cleaning the colon is to allow it to relax and rejuvenate itself. The colon cannot restore itself to a healthy state when it is constantly having to work to rid itself of accumulated waste and fecal material. Therefore, it is a good preventative measure to remove the buildup of toxins and wastes and maintain good health by cleansing of the lower bowel.
How many colon irrigations do I need?
Often the accumulated fecal waste is so hard and well lodged in the colon that it may take a series of colonics to sufficiently soften and loosen it up. Once your colon is clean, it is advisable to have a maintenance colonic four times a year (change of seasons) or as often as you feel the need in your body. Another time when you may want to benefit from a colonic is at the beginning, middle or end of a fast or purifying diet to expedite the removal of metabolic waste.
What should be done before and after a colonic?
The day before the colonic one should consider eating light meals such as; fruit, juice, steamed or raw vegetables, salads and/or soup broth. Please refrain from meats, dairy products, breads, junk foods and drinking tea or coffee. Drink a lot of water.
After a colonic the client should take acidophilus capsules, tablets or powder in order to insure that the intestinal flora in the colon are replaced.
Foods to avoid after a Colonic!
For the rest of the day do not eat spicy foods raw vegetables, bread, dairy products or fried foods.
